It’s finally here! This is the final week of training before the Rock’n’Roll Marathon in San Diego. It has been a very long journey to get to this point, but we made it. All that is left to do is run. Wahoo!

Enjoy this week's training recap below! And be sure to head on over to @imhaileymorgan on Instagram to see this week's Reel. There may even be a couple seconds of dog footage in it, which makes it worth the watch.

Best wishes!

Sunday - May 26th, 2024

Prescribed Workout: active recovery

Activity: walk with Maple

Summary: Maple and I enjoyed our last active recovery walk together of this training cycle. As always, she stopped and smelled almost all of the flowers and I watched her be the cutest little floof ever. I'd call that a win-win.

Monday - May 27th, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 4 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi)

Distance: 4 miles

Time: 35:05

Avg. Pace: 8:45/mi

Route: outside + 1mi w/ Maple

Rating: 3 out of 5

Summary: This was a lovely, easy neighborhood run. The weather was pretty and Maple really enjoyed our run together.

Tuesday - May 28th, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 3 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi)

Distance: 3 miles

Time: 25:37

Avg. Pace: 8:31/mi

Route: outside w/ Maple

Rating: 4 out of 5

Summary: Again, today I kept the pace of this run very easy. I am focusing on not overextending myself prior to the marathon on Sunday. In years past, I have neglected to honor the importance of the taper prior to a race. This time, I am doing my best to be responsible, keep my easy runs really easy, and show up to the starting line in the best condition possible.

Wednesday - May 29th, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 8 mile threshold workout

Workout Description: 2mi wu + 8 x 800m @ 6:36/mi + 2mi cd

Distance: 8 miles

Time: 1:07:26

Avg. Pace: 8:28/mi

Location: outside + 2mi w/ Maple

Rating: 1 out of 5

Summary: This run was absolutely terrible. It was probably the worst run out of this entire training cycle, barring the day the treadmill broke mid-run and the couple of runs where I had knee issues. Other than that, this run takes 1st place for being truly abysmal. I hated every single second of it. I was excited to do this run. I have been hitting paces and distances throughout the past few months that were vastly more difficult than this workout. I thought that this speed workout was going to be the perfect way to sign-off from speed work for this training cycle and feel prepared to hit my goal pace in the marathon. I could not have been more wrong. Every step was miserable. I couldn’t get my legs to turn over fast enough to hit the prescribed paces and I felt winded. It is so unusual for me to feel winded while running, so this stood out to me as a major red flag, especially when taken in conjunction with last weekend’s long run where I encountered a similar issue. Please, don’t be fooled by the splits that are listed for this workout. During every single repeat I had to stop MULTIPLE times to catch my breath. It was awful. Maple was the only bright spot of this run and even that was sullied by an unexpected squall of driving rain that came ripping through at exactly that moment. Wonderful. I’m sure you can imagine the major eye roll that I may or may not have given the Universe, Mother Nature, and any other cosmic being that may have had a hand in this whole experience. Dramatic, I know, but I was over it.

Here are my splits:

Warmup: 8:28/mi

Repeat 1: 6:24/mi Repeat 2: 6:48/mi Repeat 3: 6:39/mi

Repeat 4: 6:45/mi

Repeat 5: 6:36/mi Repeat 6: 7:01/mi Repeat 7: 6:43/mi

Repeat 8: 6:52/mi

Cooldown: 8:33/mi avg

Thursday - May 30th, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 3 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi)

Distance: 3 miles

Time: 25:18

Avg. Pace: 8:24/mi

Route: outside + 1mi w/ Maple

Rating: 3 out of 5

Summary: This run went fine. I am still battling some lingering tightness in my chest. As of yet, I have been unable to identify the source of it. It may be allergies, a reaction to the fine layer of dust that is currently coating most surfaces in my house due to last weekend’s house projects, or the beginnings of a chest cold. I really have no idea, but I’m just trying to not overthink this and freak myself out. Other than that, this run was a lovely last run before beginning to travel to San Diego.

Friday - May 31st, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 4 miles @ recovery pace (8:27-9:09/mi) + strides

Distance: 4 miles

Time: 39:46

Avg. Pace: 9:55/mi

Route: outside w/ my mom

Rating: 5 out of 5

Summary: This run was magical. We kept the pace really light and enjoyed running in San Diego. I found my dream neighborhood and spent all four miles running up and down the streets, fantasizing about what it would be like to live in any of the gorgeous homes that lined the streets. I am an absolute sucker for a picturesque historic home, which, luckily for me, this neighborhood was teeming with them. Unfortunately, the breathing issues are persisting, despite using an inhaler to curb the effects. Still, San Diego is a dream and I loved every step of this run.

Saturday - June 1st, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 2 miles @ shakeout pace (8:27-9:09/mi) + strides

Distance: 2 miles

Time: 19:41

Avg. Pace: 9:49/mi

Route: outside w/ my mom

Rating: 5 out of 5

Summary: When faced with the question of where to run today, we quickly decided that returning to the neighborhood that we ran in yesterday was the clear answer. It was just as beautiful this morning as we wove up and down the streets. We kept this run nice and easy. I ended these two miles feeling like I’ve done everything I could to show up tomorrow ready to race. As of this morning, I did start taking cold medicine to try and counteract the congestion in my chest. I no longer believe it is allergies or the dust in my house, for obvious reasons. That leaves a chest cold, so I’m doing my best to manage that. In better news, if anyone is looking for a roommate in Mission Hills, I am a decent baker, will organize your books in alphabetical order by author, and come with an adorable golden retriever.

Overview

Training Phase: Competition Phase

Training Block: Taper

Total Distance: 24 miles

Summary: Honestly, I wish this week would have felt better. Although I’m trying to remain optimistic, I am concerned about my difficulty breathing while running during the past week. Seemingly, this came out of nowhere and I am doing everything in my power to manage it. There have been countless moments over the past few months that I have proven myself to be more capable than I ever imagined. Those are the memories that I am trying to focus on now and to remember tomorrow while I’m out there on the course. No matter what happens during the race, I am proud of what I accomplished in training and I know that there are bigger and better things ahead of me still.

Cheers to the last week of training! And cheers to an early bedtime and lots of carbs! Let’s do this!

Highs: 1) San Diego is an absolutely beautiful place to run in, 2) it is almost race day!

Lows: 1) difficulty breathing

Things that went well: 1) feeling mentally prepared to tackle the challenges of the marathon

Things that I will be altering in the future: 1) not doing house projects that unleash mounds of dust during the most critical part of a training cycle

Rating:
