Remember how last week I was talking about how unremarkable my training was? Well, I think The Universe heard me and decided to add a little bit of 🔥spice🔥. This week, the unexpected, frustrating, and downright infuriating happened. I tried to take it all in stride, but honestly, sometimes I really struggle to do that. This week was a bit of a doozy. Hopefully next week is better. And Universe, if you're listening, no that is not me taunting you.

Enjoy this week's training recap below! And be sure to head on over to @imhaileymorgan on Instagram to see this week's Reel. There may even be a couple seconds of dog footage in it, which makes it worth the watch.

Best wishes!

Sunday - April 21st, 2024

Prescribed Workout: active recovery

Activity: walk w/ Maple

Summary: Maple and I enjoyed a lovely walk together today. At least until it got suddenly very cold, rainy, and windy. In true Maple fashion, she loved it. In true me fashion, I was freezing, but tried to stay positive because she loved it.

Monday - April 22nd, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 4 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi) w/ last mile @ incline

Distance: 4 miles

Time: 34:22

Avg. Pace: 8:33/mi

Route: outside + 1mi w/ Maple

Rating: 4 out of 5

Summary: Today's run was absolutely beautiful. The sun was shining and it was warm. I know some people dread summer running, but I love it. The heat is one of my very best friends. I can't wait for the warmer months. Maple and I ran together for the last mile and I chose a route that contained a substantial hill. We sprinted to the top together, which is one of Maple's favorite activities. In case you didn't know, she likes to go fast. Always.

Tuesday - April 23rd, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 8 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi)

Distance: 8 miles

Time: 1:08:47

Avg. Pace: 8:35/mi

Route: outside + 1mi w/ Maple

Rating: 3 out of 5

Summary: Today's run felt okay. The weather was nice, but my body felt more tired than normal. We are doing house projects this week. So far that has meant that I've been removing old flooring and baseboards for hours. I may be able to run for hours, but I'm not used to ripping out old carpet or prying nails out of walls. It's taken a toll on how I've felt while running. There hasn't been a major impact, but it's been noticeable.

Wednesday - April 24th, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 4 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi)

Distance: 4 miles

Time: 34:57

Avg. Pace: 8:44/mi

Route: outside

Rating: 2 out of 5

Summary: Today was supposed to be a speed workout. However, we also had a delivery of new flooring and baseboards coming in "sometime". I spent all day waiting for that delivery, certain that "they will be here in 10 minutes" so I didn't think I had time to run. Well a delivery window from 10am to 2pm eventually turned into a delivery at 4pm. By the time it was all said and done, the weather was decidedly rainy and miserable and I felt like my workout was best pushed to tomorrow. I still got outside and ran my run that was scheduled for Friday. Life happened today and I made an adjustment, but still, it was not ideal.

Thursday - April 25th, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 10 mile speed workout

Workout Description: 2mi wu + 2 x 1200m @ 6:01/mi w/ 1:15 walk + 4 x 1000m @ 6:01/mi w/ 1:00 walk + 4 x 800m @ 6:01/mi w/ 1:00 walk + 2mi cd

Distance: 4.73 miles

Time: 37:09

Avg. Pace: 7:51/mi

Location: treadmill

Rating: 1 out of 5

Summary: This is when my frustration for the week really peaked. Here I was, just minding my own business, trying to get my speed workout done, and WHAM! Life came out of nowhere and smacked me right upside the head. Metaphorically speaking, of course. I was hitting my splits and feeling great, when all of a sudden the left front end of the treadmill dropped out from under me. PSA: This is why you should always wear the emergency shut-off clip when running on a treadmill. You can be the most coordinated person in the world, but sometimes things just happen. This was one of those things. It takes a lot to make me angry, but I was enraged when this happened. Silly, I know. There are a lot of bigger things to get upset about in life and yes, I have cooled down since then. All week felt like a buildup of little things, so when this happened, I was really frustrated. I didn't even attempt to finish my run outside because it was wet and slippery outside. The last thing I needed in that moment was to slip and fall while trying to run 6:00/mi pace on the road. I called it a day and this was my first speed workout that I didn't complete fully this training cycle. Oh well, sometimes things like this happen and that's just the way it is. And by the way, the problem with the treadmill is that one of the bolts attaching the adjustable foot to the frame broke off. I have no idea why, but we've unfortunately had issues with this treadmill since we got it. Fingers crossed that they can fix it next week!

Here are my splits: Honestly, I'm not even going to bother. Just know that it was going well until it, well, wasn't.

Friday - April 26th, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 8 miles @ easy pace (7:22-8:21/mi)

Distance: 8 miles

Time: 1:11:04

Avg. Pace: 8:51/mi

Route: outside + 2mi w/ Maple

Rating: 4 out of 5

Summary: Today's run was cold, but nice. I kept the pace really easy and Maple ran the final two miles with me. I was still feeling a bit sore and tired from all of the house projects. Turns out that clearing all of the flooring out of your house by yourself kinda sucks, especially when you don't have stellar hand/upper body strength. I'm going to classify that as "areas for improvement" and I'll get back to it...someday.

Saturday - April 27th, 2024

Prescribed Workout: 20 miles (moved to Monday)

Summary: Due to the limited amount of time that we have to install new flooring, it was best for me to reschedule my long run to Monday. We need the entire weekend to work on the house, so it made the most sense to not spend hours running. I am excited for this 20 miler though, because it has some threshold work. Fun!

Overview

Training Phase: Preparation Phase

Training Block: Build Fitness

Total Distance: 28.73 miles

Summary: OOF. This week was just a lot. There were scheduling conflicts and house projects and treadmill issues and just lots of little twists and turns that resulted in a complicated week, both in life and in running. If you were wondering, yes, it did occur to me that this week was lucky number 13. Hopefully, next week is awesome because 14 is my favorite number. It has to be. Right? RIGHT?!

Highs: 1) sunshine miles

Lows: 1) treadmill breaking mid-step

Things that went well: 1) getting a run done despite complicated scheduling issues

Things that I will be altering in the future: 1) some upper body strength training, especially if I'm going to be doing any sort of remodeling in the future

Rating:
